30 hours funding by age: 9-23 months
Everything parents need to know about childcare funding for children aged 9-23 months, including eligibility requirements and application timing.
From September 2024, some children aged 9-23 months became eligible for 15 hours of funded childcare. This guide explains who qualifies and how to apply.
Who qualifies at 9-23 months
Children aged 9-23 months can get 15 hours of funded childcare per week if their parents meet the working requirements. This is part of the government's expansion of childcare support.
New scheme
Parent requirements
Both parents (or the single parent) must:
- Be working (employed or self-employed)
- Earn at least £152 per week on average
- Earn less than £100,000 per year
- Live in England
When to apply
Apply when your child turns 9 months old, or as soon as possible after. You can use the funded hours from the term after your child becomes eligible.
Term start dates
- September term: starts early September
- January term: starts early January
- April term: starts after Easter
Finding suitable providers
Not all childcare providers accept children under 2 years old, and even fewer offer funded places for this age group. Start your search early and consider:
- Nurseries that specifically cater to babies and toddlers
- Registered childminders in your area
- Day nurseries with baby rooms
What to expect
Childcare for 9-23 month olds is quite different from care for older children. Providers will focus on:
- Individual care routines (feeding, sleeping, nappy changes)
- Sensory play and exploration
- Language development through songs and stories
- Building secure attachments with key workers
Additional costs
Combining with other support
You can use this funding alongside other government schemes:
- Tax-free childcare: Use for additional hours or costs not covered by funding
- Childcare vouchers: If you already receive them (scheme is closing to new applicants)
- Universal Credit: May still be available for some costs
Moving to 2-year funding
When your child turns 2, they may become eligible for different funding depending on your circumstances. The eligibility criteria change, so you'll need to reapply.
